Cab Ride Experience

Saturday, May 23, 2026 | Doors: 1:30pm, Show: 2:00pm

For a select few guests, Prairie Sky Heritage Railway is offering a rare, behind-the-scenes experience inside the locomotive cab. This is not simply a different seat—it’s a chance to experience the railway from the front of the train, alongside the operating crew.

Not Just a Different Seat

For a select few guests, Prairie Sky Heritage Railway is offering something rare — a behind-the-scenes experience inside the locomotive cab. This is not simply a different seat. It’s a chance to stand at the front of the train, alongside the operating crew, and experience the railway from the place where every journey truly begins.
The cab is where the decisions are made, where the throttle is pulled, where the horn sounds across the open prairie. It’s louder, warmer, and more alive than anywhere else on the train. And for one afternoon, it’s yours.
This is a limited, intimate experience — offered to only one guest per excursion. If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to sit where the engineer sits, this is your invitation.

What To Expect

  • Before Departure  Arrive and check in at the departure platform. As other passengers settle into the heritage coaches behind you, you’ll be welcomed by our operating crew at the locomotive itself. This is where your experience begins — standing trackside, face to face with the machine that moves the train.
  • Our engineer will walk you through a private safety briefing: the cab layout, hand signals, horn sequences, and what you’ll see and hear once we’re underway.
  • Food & Beverage at Departure Before you climb aboard, enjoy complimentary food and beverages offered at the departure point. Take a moment to settle in, soak up the atmosphere, and fuel up before you ride.
  • This is the working heart of the train. You’ll ride alongside our engineer and observe real-time operations — throttle adjustments, brake handling, radio communication, and signal awareness. There is no script. You’re watching a skilled crew do what they do, and they’ll narrate as they go.
  • Inside the Cab — The Run Expect it to be loud, warm, and visceral. The hum of the engine beneath your feet, the rhythmic pull of steel on rail, the horn sounding at every crossing — this is railroading the way it was meant to be felt, not just watched.
  • The View The prairie unfolds differently from the front of the train. There are no windows framing the landscape for you — there’s the open track ahead, the horizon stretching wide, and the quiet understanding that for over a century, someone sat in this very seat and watched the same sky.
  • At the Turnaround When the train reaches the turnaround point, step down from the cab, stretch your legs, and enjoy a second round of complimentary food and beverages. It’s a chance to catch your breath, chat with the crew, swap stories with fellow cab riders, and take in the prairie from a whole new vantage point before the return journey.
  • The Return – Climb back into the cab for the ride home. The return run offers a completely different perspective — watching the landscape you just crossed now approach from the opposite direction, the light shifting, the rhythm settling into something familiar. By the time you step off the locomotive, the railway won’t feel like something you watched. It’ll feel like something you did.

This Experience Is for You If…

  • You’ve always wondered what it’s like to sit where the engineer sits
  • You love the mechanics, the sounds, and the story of how trains actually move
  • You’re looking for a memory that goes deeper than a ticket stub — something you felt
  • You want to share a once-in-a-lifetime moment with someone special
  • You believe the best stories come from behind the scenes
